Which preset for which layout

1080×1080 for a classic square post, 1080×1350 (4:5) for the tallest allowed portrait — which takes up more screen space in the feed than a square — 1080×566 for a wide landscape post, 1080×1920 for stories and reels, and 320×320 for a profile picture.

Fit vs crop

Crop fills the chosen frame edge-to-edge from the centre, trimming the overflow — right for most posts. Fit scales the whole photo inside the frame without cutting anything, useful when the full composition, like a screenshot or graphic with text near the edges, must stay visible.

Limitations to know

Instagram still re-encodes every upload — this only removes its resizing step, not its compression.

Common problems and fixes

Crop mode trims from the centre outward to fill the target ratio. Switch to Fit if the composition can't lose any edges, or re-frame the source photo before resizing.

Why does the portrait preset look better in the feed than square?

1080×1350 is the tallest ratio Instagram's feed allows, so it occupies more vertical screen space on a phone than a 1080×1080 square post.

Will Instagram still compress my resized photo?

Yes, it always re-encodes uploads. Supplying the exact display size just means it doesn't also have to resize the image first, which is where most of the extra quality loss otherwise happens.
