How the target-KB search works

The tool encodes the resized image, measures the actual byte count, and adjusts the JPEG quality in a binary search until the output lands under your target. The number you see is the size of the file you're about to download, not an estimate.

Dimensions first, quality second

If a form caps uploads at, say, 200 KB, reducing the pixel width usually gets you there with a much higher, cleaner quality setting than trying to squeeze the same limit out of full-size dimensions.

Dimensions mode is for exact layout requirements. Target size mode is for byte limits — enter the KB figure the form specifies and the encoder does the rest, down to a minimum accepted target of 5 KB.

When to use it

  • Scaling a photo down to the exact width a website layout requires.

Limitations to know

  • The output stays a JPG — use a converter first if you also need a different format.
  • Aspect ratio isn't auto-linked; entering mismatched width and height will stretch the photo.
  • Enlarging a small JPG doesn't add real detail, only bigger, softer pixels.

Common problems and fixes

The target size search keeps failing to reach my limit.

The current pixel dimensions are too large for that KB target at any usable quality. Lower the width, then run the target size search again.

My resized photo is stretched.

Width and height were entered independently and don't share the original ratio. Type only one value, or match the ratio manually.

Is there any benefit to resizing larger than the original?

No — you'll get a bigger file with interpolated, softer pixels rather than new detail. Use the highest-resolution original you have instead.
